The first step in many water resource projects is determining the amount of runoff that a site either receives from an upstream catchment or generates itself. HGC’s water team works closely with our civil engineers and designers to accurately define these areas, and then determine the anticipated runoff volumes to efficiently deal with in project design.
From dam break studies to river intake design, accurately understanding where surface water flows, and at what intensity, is critical to project success. HGC uses the HEC-RAS software suite to complete 1-D and 2-D hydraulic modelling to accurately show you the impact of surface water on your project.
Once water flows are determined, the next project step is designing infrastructure to cope with the forecasted flows. Working together with our civil and geotechnical engineers, HGC designs efficient and practical water management infrastructure for your site, including culverts, ditching, flood barriers, kickouts, check dams, dam spillways and water intakes.
The design and evaluation of water storage and tailings dams, and containment ponds requires close interaction between hydrotechnical and geotechnical engineers. As the Engineer of Record on over 30 regulated dams in Western Canada, HGC can bring a wealth of practical experience to your fluid storage project.
Successful water storage projects require efficient and accurate water licensing. HGC has extensive successful experience in water license applications, both new and renewals, and temporary and permanent. We have excellent working relationships with both the BC OGC and AER, and our license experience includes surface runoff and river diversion applications, as well as dam storage applications.
